M3U vs Xtream Codes: Which Login Should You Use for IPTV?

Your IPTV USA account gives you two ways to sign in an app: an Xtream Codes login (a server address, username, and password) and an M3U link (one long web address). Most apps accept one or both, and picking the wrong one is behind a lot of “no TV guide” and “invalid login” problems. Choose your app or device below and we will tell you which to use, where to find it in My Account, and why.

Which one should you use?

Pick the app or device you plan to watch on. Each answer follows the setup guide for that app.

What an M3U link is

M3U is a playlist file format. Wikipedia’s entry on M3U traces it back to a Fraunhofer music player from around 1996, and notes that it has no formal specification. It is a plain text file. It starts with a line reading #EXTM3U, and then each channel takes two lines: an #EXTINF line with the channel’s name and details, followed by the address of its stream. IPTV playlists add extra tags to the #EXTINF line, such as a logo, a group name like “Sports”, and an ID that lets the app match the channel to the TV guide.

The M3U link you get is the web address of that file. Open it in an app and the app downloads the list. That is why it works in almost any player. It is also why it has limits: the file is only a list of channels, so anything else, such as the TV guide, has to come from somewhere else.

What Xtream Codes is

Xtream Codes is a login method rather than a file. You give the app a server address, a username, and a password, and the app talks to the server directly. It asks for the categories, the live channels, the movies, the series, and the TV guide, and the server answers for each one. The name comes from a control-panel product, and the same login format is now used by many servers and apps. It is a de facto standard, not an official one.

For you, the practical difference is that the app is in a conversation with the server, so it can show categories as you browse, sort movies and series into their own sections, and pick up the guide automatically. An M3U link hands over one list and stops there.

The short version: which one to pick

If the app offers Xtream Codes, use it. It sets up the channels and the guide together and is what every guide on this site recommends. Use the M3U link when the app has no Xtream option, as with VLC and Kodi, or when an Xtream login keeps failing and you want to test whether the problem is the login or the app. A few devices use neither: a MAG box uses a portal URL, and IPTVUSA App 2 signs in with your username and password.

You do not have to choose once and live with it. Both come from the same account, so you can use Xtream Codes on your TV app and the M3U link in VLC on your laptop at the same time, up to your plan’s connection limit.

Your M3U link is a password

Because your username and password are written inside the M3U link, anyone who has the link can watch on your account. Do not post it in a forum, a group chat, or a public support thread, and do not send it in a screenshot. An Xtream Codes login has the same power, but it is easier to notice because it is three separate fields you have to type.

If you think your link has leaked, contact support and ask about changing your password. A link that contains the old password should stop working once it changes. Also check whether your server address starts with https or http: some servers use plain http, which means details are sent without encryption.

Find your details and connect

A few minutes, once you know which one you need.

  1. Open My Account. Sign in on the My Account page and open the subscription tab. Your details appear once your trial or order is approved.
  2. Find the Xtream Codes details. Look for the username, the password, and the server URL. If more than one server URL is listed, read any note beside each one, and try another only if the first will not connect.
  3. Find the M3U link. It is a single long web address. Copy the whole thing, including everything after the question mark.
  4. Decide with the chooser. Use the chooser above to see which one your app needs.
  5. Enter Xtream Codes. Choose Xtream Codes or Xtream API in the app, then type the server URL, username, and password exactly as shown. Add a name for the profile if asked.
  6. Or paste the M3U link. Choose the option for a playlist or URL, paste the link, and give the playlist a name. Wait for the list to load, which can take a minute with a large lineup.
  7. If it fails, try the other. If Xtream Codes fails, try the M3U link, and the other way round. If both fail, send support the app name and the message you see.

What each option asks you for

Menu labels vary between apps. Pick an option to see the fields to look for.

Server URL
The address of the server, often with a port number after it. Copy it exactly from My Account, including http or https.
Username and password
Both are case sensitive. If you copy and paste, check that no space came along at the end.
Profile name
A label for your own use. Anything works, and it is how you tell logins apart if you add more than one.

Xtream Codes and M3U side by side

Question The short answer
Which gives me the TV guide? Xtream Codes brings the guide with the channels. An M3U playlist can carry a guide address in its header and tags each channel with an ID, but many apps still need the guide address added separately.
Which shows movies and series? Xtream Codes sorts them into Movies and Series sections. How an M3U link shows on-demand titles depends on the app, and many apps treat it as a list of live channels.
Which is faster to open? An M3U link is downloaded in full each time, which can be slow on older devices with a large lineup. Xtream Codes lets the app fetch only what it needs as you browse.
Which works in more apps? The M3U link. VLC, Kodi, and most players accept it, while Xtream Codes needs an app that supports it.
Which is safer to share? Neither. An M3U link has your username and password inside it, and an Xtream Codes login is the username and password. Keep both private.
Can I use both at once? Yes, on different devices. They come from the same account, so both count against your plan’s connection limit.
Can I edit the channel list? An M3U file is text and can be edited if you download a copy, but the link from your account always gives you the provider’s current list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between M3U and Xtream Codes?

An M3U link is one web address pointing to a playlist of channels, with your login inside it. Xtream Codes is a server address, username, and password that an app uses to load channels, movies, series, and the guide directly.

Which should I use, M3U or Xtream Codes?

Use Xtream Codes if your app offers it. Use the M3U link for VLC, Kodi, and apps that have no Xtream option.

Why is there no TV guide with my M3U link?

A plain M3U playlist lists channels only. The guide comes from a separate XMLTV address in most apps, so switching to an Xtream Codes login is usually the simplest fix.

Where do I find my Xtream Codes details?

On your My Account page, once your trial or order is approved. You need the server URL, username, and password.

Is an M3U link the same as my username and password?

The link contains them. That is why it can be pasted into VLC, which has no login fields, and why it should be kept private.

Can I use the same account for both?

Yes. Both come from one account, and they share your plan’s connection limit.

Why does my app say invalid username or password?

Compare each detail with My Account character by character, check for a space at the end, and make sure your trial or order is approved. Then try the other method.

Does a MAG box use M3U or Xtream Codes?

Neither. A MAG box uses a portal URL, and support links your box’s MAC address to your account.
