How to Set Up IPTV in Kodi

Kodi is a free media center that runs on almost every device, and it can show live TV through a built-in add-on called PVR IPTV Simple Client. It suits people who already use Kodi and want live TV alongside their other media. Setup takes about ten minutes.

Is Kodi right for you?

Kodi is a general media center, so live TV is one of many things it does. If you already run Kodi for movies, music, or a media library, adding live TV keeps everything in one place. If all you want is to watch live channels, a dedicated app like IPTVUSA App 2 or IPTV Smarters is simpler and needs less setup.

Getting the guide to match your channels

A guide only lines up if each channel in your playlist is matched to an entry in the XMLTV file. PVR IPTV Simple Client does this using the channel IDs the playlist provides, and can fall back to channel names. If some channels show a schedule and others do not, the guide file and the playlist may not use the same IDs — that is a provider-side detail, so contact support with a couple of examples. Once channels are matched, use the add-on’s EPG time shift setting if every show is offset by the same number of hours.

How the PVR add-on works

PVR IPTV Simple Client reads a playlist in M3U format and, if you give it one, a guide in XMLTV format. It then presents the channels through Kodi’s own TV section, using Kodi’s regular interface. Kodi does not supply channels itself; the playlist and guide come from your IPTV subscription. Recent Kodi versions ask you to create a configuration for the add-on, so do not be surprised if you are asked to add one before the settings appear.

Setup, step by step

About ten minutes.

  1. Install the IPTV Simple Client add-on. In Kodi, go to Settings → Add-ons → My add-ons → PVR clients, select PVR IPTV Simple Client, and enable it.
  2. Configure the add-on. Open the add-on’s settings. If Kodi asks you to add a configuration, choose Add. Under the General tab, set the location to a remote path (internet address) and set M3U Play List URL to your M3U link from your My Account page.
  3. Add your EPG (optional). If you have an XMLTV guide link, add it under the EPG Settings tab, again as a remote path, for a full channel guide.
  4. Enable the PVR client. Save your settings, then go back to the Kodi home screen and select TV from the main menu to start watching. The first load can take a minute while Kodi imports channels and guide data.

Kodi tips

What to check when live TV in Kodi misbehaves.

Use the M3U link
Kodi’s add-on needs your M3U playlist link, not an Xtream username and password.
Location type
Set the location to a remote path (internet address) rather than a local file when using a link.

Troubleshooting

Problem What to try
No channels appear under TV Check that the add-on is enabled, the M3U link is pasted in full with the remote-path location, and your trial or order is approved. Then restart Kodi.
The add-on asks me to add a configuration That is normal on recent Kodi. Choose Add, then fill in the General tab.
There is no TV guide Add an XMLTV guide link under EPG Settings. Without one, Kodi shows channels but no schedule.
Show times are wrong Adjust the EPG time shift in the add-on’s EPG settings.
Playback stutters Raise the caching buffer, keep Kodi updated, and follow the buffering guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an XMLTV link?

Only if you want a channel guide. Without one, Kodi still plays channels but shows no schedule.

PVR IPTV Simple Client reads a playlist address directly. The M3U link contains your login.

Is Kodi free?

Yes, Kodi is free and open source.

Is Kodi illegal?

No. Kodi is legal media-player software. What matters is whether the content you stream is licensed; see the legality guide.

Can I use the same login elsewhere?

Yes, up to your plan’s simultaneous-stream limit.
