How to Set Up IPTV on a Mac

The simplest, most reliable way to watch on a Mac is VLC, a free media player that handles IPTV playlists natively. You paste your M3U link into VLC and your channel list loads. If you would rather have a channel guide, there is an app option too.

At a glance

Works on Any Mac that can run VLC
App VLC media player (free), or Smarters Player Lite from the Mac App Store (Apple silicon Macs only)
Login Your M3U playlist link (VLC) or Xtream Codes details (Smarters)
Channel guide Not in VLC; included in Smarters
Setup time About 5 minutes

VLC or a dedicated app?

VLC is the quickest way in: nothing to sign in to, no store account, and it plays almost any stream. What it does not do is give you a proper live-TV experience — there is no channel guide, no favorites, and no on-demand browsing. If you mostly want to play a channel and watch, VLC is perfect. If you want a TV-style guide, install Smarters Player Lite from the Mac App Store and use the same Xtream Codes login described in our iPhone guide. IMPlayer also runs on a recent Mac with an Apple silicon chip.

Finding your channels in VLC

A full lineup is a very long list. VLC’s playlist panel has a search box, so type part of a channel name to jump straight to it, and double-click to play. You can save the current playlist from the File menu if you want to reopen it later. VLC does not download a TV guide, so you will not see what is on next; if that matters to you, use Smarters Player Lite, which shows a full guide.

M3U link, not Xtream Codes, in VLC

VLC needs a single playlist address rather than a username and password. Log in to your My Account page and copy the M3U playlist link — the long address. Because it contains your login, treat it like a password and do not share it.

Setup, step by step

Five minutes with VLC.

  1. Install VLC. Download VLC media player from videolan.org if you do not already have it, then install it.
  2. Get your M3U link. Log in to your My Account page and copy your M3U playlist link.
  3. Open the stream in VLC. Open VLC, choose File → Open Network, paste your M3U link, and select Open.
  4. Pick a channel. Your full channel list loads in VLC’s playlist panel. Double-click a channel to play it.
  5. Optional: use an app instead. Prefer a guide? Smarters Player Lite runs on Macs with an Apple silicon chip (Apple lists it as an iPad app that is not verified for macOS) and uses the same Xtream Codes login as our other guides. Check that the developer is WHMCS SMARTERS, and see our IPTV Smarters guide for how to spot look-alikes.

Mac tips

The VLC settings that fix the most common problems.

Network caching
Open VLC’s settings, switch to the advanced view (Show All), and find Network caching under Input / Codecs. The default is about one second; raising it to a few thousand milliseconds reduces stalls at the cost of a slower start.
Hardware decoding
Leave hardware decoding on for smooth playback and lower CPU use. If you see glitches, try turning it off.

Troubleshooting

Problem What to try
VLC says it cannot open the location Recopy the M3U link from My Account, making sure nothing is cut off, and check that your trial or order is approved.
The channel list is empty Confirm you pasted the M3U link, not the Xtream server URL. VLC needs the full playlist address.
There is no TV guide VLC does not include one. Use Smarters Player Lite from the Mac App Store for a guide.
Playback stutters Raise VLC’s network caching, close heavy apps, and follow the buffering guide.
Smarters will not install The App Store version may need Apple silicon or a recent macOS. VLC works on nearly any Mac.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay for VLC?

No. VLC is free and open source.

Why an M3U link instead of a username and password?

VLC plays a playlist address directly and has no field for a username and password. The M3U link contains the login.

Can I get a channel guide on Mac?

Yes, with Smarters Player Lite from the Mac App Store, which uses your Xtream Codes login.

Is it safe to paste my M3U link?

It works like a password, so keep it private. Paste it into VLC and nowhere else.

Can I use the same login on my iPhone?

Yes, up to your plan’s simultaneous-stream limit.
