IPTV EPG Not Loading? How to Fix an Empty or Wrong TV Guide

The channels play, but the TV guide is blank, says “No information”, or shows the right shows at the wrong time. That is a guide (EPG) problem, not a video problem, and it almost always comes down to one of four causes. Pick what you see below and we will point you at the most likely one, then work through the fixes in order.

What are you seeing?

Choose the symptom that matches your guide. Each answer gives the most likely cause and the first thing to try.

At a glance

What the guide is A separate data file (usually XMLTV) that the app reads to show what is on, and it is not part of the video stream
Why video plays with no guide The video and the guide come from different places, so one can work while the other fails
Four common causes No guide source or first download unfinished, channels not matched to the guide, wrong time zone, or stale or oversized guide data
Best login type Xtream Codes, because it loads the guide with the channels
First things to check Device date and time set to automatic, then update the guide in the app
When to contact support When the same channels stay blank or wrong after an update and a clean refresh

What the guide actually is

The TV guide, or EPG, is a separate set of data from the video. Your player gets the video from a channel’s stream, and it gets the schedule from a guide file, usually in a format called XMLTV. That is why a channel can play perfectly while the guide beside it is empty: the two come from different places and can fail independently.

With an Xtream Codes login, the app asks the server for the guide along with the channels, so it normally arrives without any setup. With an M3U link, the app gets a list of channels and has to be told separately where to find a guide. That one difference explains a large share of “no guide” problems, and it is why our guides recommend Xtream Codes. See the M3U vs Xtream Codes guide for how the two differ.

Why the guide breaks: the four causes

The first cause is a missing or unfinished download. No guide source was set, or the first download is still running. A large lineup means a large file, and the first load can take a few minutes. The second is matching. The player links each channel to a guide entry by comparing IDs, and per UniPlayer’s XMLTV reference it tries the channel ID first and then falls back to comparing names, which is fragile because of spacing, HD suffixes, and formatting differences. When a channel has no match, it shows nothing.

The third cause is time. XMLTV timestamps carry a time zone offset, and if one is left out, players assume UTC, which shifts the whole guide by the gap between UTC and your local time. An app or device that converts times wrongly has the same effect. The fourth is the data itself: a stale or damaged saved copy, or a guide too large for a small device to handle.

Fix the device clock first

Your player calculates the time of every show relative to the device’s own clock. A wrong date, time, or time zone shifts the whole guide at once, and no guide setting inside the app will correct it. Before you touch anything in the app, open the device’s own settings, find Date and Time, and turn on the automatic option for both time and time zone. Then set any guide time offset in the app back to 0 and look again.

Only after that should you change an offset. Adjust it in whole hours and stop when the schedule matches what is really on. A time zone problem shifts every show by the same fixed amount, usually whole hours, so a shift that varies from channel to channel points to something else.

What you cannot fix from your side

Some guide problems sit on the data side rather than in your app. If a channel has no guide entry at the source, no setting on your device will invent one. If the same channels stay blank after a clean update on more than one device, that is the sign. Do not keep reinstalling the app. Send support the channel names and the app you are using, and we can check whether the guide data covers them.

Fix the guide in order

Work through these in order. Most problems are fixed by one of the first four.

  1. Wait for the first download. On a large lineup the first guide download can take a few minutes. Wait for it to finish before judging the guide.
  2. Check the device clock. In the device’s own settings, turn on automatic date, time, and time zone. A wrong clock shifts every show at once.
  3. Check how you logged in. Use an Xtream Codes login where the app offers it, because it loads the guide with the channels. An M3U link often needs a separate guide address.
  4. Update the guide. Look for an option called Update EPG, Reload EPG, or a similar name in the app’s guide or playlist settings, and run it.
  5. Clear the guide data, then update again. If your app has a Clear EPG option, use it and then update. A saved copy that has been damaged will not fix itself.
  6. Reset the time offset. Set the guide offset to 0, then change it in whole hours only if the times are still wrong.
  7. Restart and update the app. Close the app fully or restart the device, and check for a newer version of the app.
  8. Still wrong. Send support the app and version, your device model, your login type, one channel that is wrong, and what it shows against the real time.

Where to look in each app

Menu names change between versions, so look for the closest match. This comes from our app guides and reviewer reports, and it is worth checking against your own screen.

Update the guide
Reviewers point to an Update EPG option under the settings for your playlist. Our TiviMate guide describes it as the TV guide settings.
Clear and reload
A Clear EPG option in the guide settings removes the saved copy so a fresh update starts clean.
Time offset
Reviewers describe an offset for each guide source, and a separate one you can set on a single channel. Match it to the hour gap you see.
Days of guide data
Keeping fewer days helps on low-memory devices, and so does updating only when the app starts.
Matching channels
One source reports that matching a channel to a guide entry by hand is limited to Premium. Check the app’s own description.

Quick answers

What you see What to try
The guide is empty right after setup Wait for the first download to finish, which can take a few minutes on a large lineup, then update the guide.
The guide is empty and I used an M3U link Add the account again as an Xtream Codes login. A plain M3U link does not bring a guide in most apps.
Every show is an hour or more off Set the device’s date, time, and time zone to automatic, put the app’s guide offset at 0, then adjust it in whole hours.
Only a few channels have no guide Update once, then send support the channel names. It is a channel matching problem.
The guide worked and stopped Update the guide, clear it if the app has that option, and check your trial or order has not expired.
The app freezes when the guide updates Keep fewer days of guide data and update only when the app starts.
The guide is right on one device only Check the clock, login type, and update status on the device that is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my IPTV EPG not loading?

The usual causes are an unfinished first download, no guide source (common with an M3U link), channels that are not matched to the guide, a wrong time zone, or stale or oversized guide data.

What does EPG mean in IPTV?

EPG stands for electronic program guide. It is the schedule of what is on now and next, and it comes from a separate data file rather than from the video stream.

Why do my channels play but the guide is empty?

The video and the guide come from different places. A channel can stream fine while the guide file has not loaded or cannot be matched to it.

Why are my guide times wrong?

Almost always a time zone problem. Set the device to automatic date and time, reset the app’s offset to 0, then adjust in whole hours if needed.

Does an M3U link include a guide?

Not in most apps. An M3U playlist lists channels, and the guide is usually a separate address. An Xtream Codes login loads the guide with the channels.

How long does the guide take to load?

The first download on a large lineup can take a few minutes. Wait for it to finish before you change any settings.

How do I refresh the EPG?

Look for an Update EPG or Reload EPG option in the app’s guide or playlist settings. If it has a Clear EPG option, use that first and then update.

Why do only some channels show a guide?

Those channels probably have no match in the guide data. Update once, then send support the channel names.
